The Book of Destiny is the foundational metaphysical artifact of the Night Watch universe, a tangible record of every individual's predetermined fate. It is not a physical book in the ordinary sense but a construct that exists in the deepest levels of the Twilight, a parallel dimension of reality. The Book can be accessed and altered only by a Great Sorceress wielding the Chalk of Destiny, a worn-down piece of chalk that has been used throughout history to rewrite the destinies of individuals who, in turn, changed the course of human civilization. The artifact is the central object of the Light's most ambitious and controversial plan: to create an ideal society by rewriting the destiny of a single, unformed individual, thereby altering the fate of humanity itself.

Nature and Appearance

The Book of Destiny is not a conventional book but a metaphysical construct that exists in the deepest layers of the Twilight. When a Great Sorceress like Svetlana Nazarova begins to work with it, she does not draw it in a literal sense but extracts a copy from the deepest levels of the Twilight, making it visible even in the human world. This copy appears as a model or replica made of fiery threads of flame hanging motionless in the air, so intense that raindrops sizzle when they touch it. The Book is intimately linked to the Chalk of Destiny, a small, worn-down piece of chalk pointed at both ends. This chalk has been used throughout history by beautiful young women with bright fire in their eyes to alter the destinies of individuals who then changed the world: shepherds became prophets, carpenters became gods, foundlings became kings, and sergeants became emperors. The chalk is so powerful that every line written in the Book of Destiny takes a particle of the sorceress's soul and returns it to her changed, meaning that altering a destiny requires giving away part of one's own soul.

The Plan to Use the Book

The Book of Destiny is the centerpiece of a long-term plan orchestrated by Boris Ignatievich (Gesar), the head of the Moscow Night Watch, and supported by the highest levels of the Light. The plan is to use the Chalk of Destiny to rewrite the destiny of Egor, a boy whose future is still completely undefined—his aura is still shimmering with all the colors of a child's, a unique case for a teenager. Gesar's goal is to make Egor into a Light Magician and, through him, to change the destiny of the human world, creating an ideal society. The plan has been twelve years in the making and involves a complex series of maneuvers designed to deceive the Day Watch, particularly its leader Zabulon, into believing that the Light is attempting a grand operation that will fail. The true purpose, however, is to force the higher authorities to completely repeal the punishment of Olga, Gesar's lover, restoring her powers and allowing her to once again pick up the Chalk of Destiny, making her Gesar's equal.

The Climax on the Roof

The climax of the novel occurs on the roof of the "house on stilts," where Svetlana, Egor, Gesar, Zabulon, and the Inquisitor Maxim have gathered. Svetlana opens the small box containing the Chalk of Destiny and begins to draw a circle around herself and Egor. She then extracts the Book of Destiny from the Twilight, making it visible as a fiery construct. As she prepares to rewrite Egor's destiny, a hurricane of immense power begins to form, a side effect of the concentration of magical energy. Gesar urges Anton to use his borrowed power to stop the hurricane, but Anton instead uses all the power he has collected on himself, performing a remoralization spell. He then tells Svetlana that she must decide for herself what to do, without advice from anyone. Svetlana, faced with the choice, sweeps her hand through the air and erases Egor's destiny instead of rewriting it. The Chalk of Destiny falls from her hand, and the Book of Destiny dissolves. Svetlana declares that she does not wish to serve in the Watch, and the plan to change the world through the Book of Destiny is abandoned.

Significance and Aftermath

The Book of Destiny represents the ultimate temptation and the ultimate failure of the Light's grand ambitions. The attempt to use it to reshape human history is revealed to be a deeply flawed and morally ambiguous project, one that has failed repeatedly throughout history. The climax reveals that the entire elaborate plan was, in Gesar's own admission, a personal maneuver to restore Olga's powers and status, not a genuine attempt to save humanity. Anton's intervention—using his borrowed power on himself rather than on the hurricane or on Svetlana—forces Svetlana to make her own choice, free from external influence. Her decision to erase Egor's destiny rather than rewrite it is a rejection of the Light's hubris and a reaffirmation of individual freedom. The Book of Destiny remains a potent symbol of the power and peril of trying to control fate, a power that the novel ultimately suggests should not be wielded by anyone, Light or Dark.
